How To Tell If A Crystal Is Real

Crystals plucked from Mother Earth are full of energy and can work amazingly in deep healing. However, if you truly want to get the most out of these dazzling gems, you have to be able to untangle the real precious stones from the fakes.

Fake crystals can be anything from glass to gemstones that have been dyed, chemically altered, or sparkle in some way. Here are some tips that may come in handy when buying gems in the future.

Glassy look
Painted or stained glass may be a common technique used as a substitute for the real deal. Few natural crystals have perfect clarity. If the stone is perfect, crystal clear without a blot, it may be glass masquerading as a gemstone.

Moh's hardness scale
The Moh’s hardness scale is an excellent tool to tell if you are dealing with genuine or counterfeit goods. The test usually that anything higher on the scale can scratch anything lower on the scale.

Strange names
Many that sound too weird or descriptive are typically marketing devices for fake stones. These fruits or mystical gems are often made from glass or dyed quartz.

Saturated colors
Many real crystals are bright too, but they appear translucent or somewhat muted compared to dyed fake crystals. If a gem appears very bright or saturated, chances are it has been dyed to look more attractive.

Air bubbles
Real crystals will contain imperfections, but never air bubbles. Air bubbles are an immediate sign that the stone is probably glass that was cut to look like a crystal.

Perfectly symmetrical patterns
The natural crystallization process yields rarely a symmetrical-looking result. So if you are looking at a crystal that is perfect in its shape and even on each side, it's probably not one of those gems born from the earth. The uniqueness of each crystal is that it will be unique.
